Comments:

The first batch of three ships was handed over to the Turkish Navy on 12 January 1998. The first ship sailed to Turkey and arrived in March 1998. FFG 10 Duncan was transferred for cannibalization

With the commissioning of Standard SM-1 missile, Turkish Navy has now the ability to perform area air defense. The CIC of these ships are modernized under the GENESIS program. 4 of these ships will receive Mk41 VLS system, ESSM missiles and a 3D radar. F-495 TCG Gediz is the first ship to have the Mk-41 system.

As all the ships were the short hull version of Perry class prior their transfer, they were operating SH-2 Seasprite helicopter in USN service. The flight decks were extended and ASIST Helicopter landing aid was integrated by Istanbul Naval Shipyard so that these ships can operate the  S-70-B2 Seahawk helicopters.

Comments:

Improved versions of Yavuz class. The improvements such as CODOG machinery for higher top speed, are results of the lessons learned from operating Yavuz class. All vital areas of the machinery are protected with Halon 1301 fire fighting system. Most of the ship is protected against NBC by a citadel. The ships have a pre-wash capability against fallout.

The second pair was Mk 41 Mod8 VLS for Sea Sparrow. It was planed that the VLS system would be retrofitted to the first pair. But this has not yet materialized.

They have very modern command, communication, control and information (C3I) systems. The integration of ASIST helicopter landing aid system enables this class to operate Seahawk helicopters. Their construction was delayed by freezing of German funds by the German government. The first pair was built in Germany.

Comments:

These ships are the first results of the modernization program started in 80'ies. The last two were built in Turkey.

They are very popular in the Navy as they offer better and a bigger punch, defense and accommodation. They are named after famous sultans of the Ottoman Empire, except TURGUTREİS who was a famous sailor. The name of that ship was quickly changed from Turgut to TURGUTREİS, after her commission, because of political critics, as the name of the Prime minister of that time was also Turgut.
